Fruits Basket -prelude- New Visual, Trailer, Character Art, and Theme song revealed!

Hello, Stephanie here! Those who know me know that I’m a huge fan of anime. So huge that I have been singing and working in the anime scene with anime and Japanese companies since 2005 now. So it should be no surprise that I am also a big fan of the anime series Fruits Basket. See my photo below where I created content for Fruits Basket merchandise which is an exclusive Fruits Basket sweater sold by BoxLunch. Some very exciting news has been revealed recently about the new prequel film.

Fruits Basket is a Japanese manga series by Natsuki Takaya. The manga was first released in 1998 followed with a 26 episode Anime series in 2001, by Studio Deen and directed by Akitaro Daichi.

It tells the story of Tohru Honda who lost her mother and is living secretly in a tent. She meets Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure Soma and is given the opportunity to live with them. While starting her new life with the Soma family she learns that they are cursed and possessed by the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

Fruits Basket continues to touch so many people through the manga, Anime series, and now the reboot that Funimation has co-produced and released through a partnership with Crunchyroll. When the final episode of the reboot was aired, we all received very exciting news that the prelude to the manga and series will be animated for the very first time.

Fruits Basket -prelude- is a special prequel film about how Tohru’s parents Kyoko Honda and Katsuya Honda first met. The film will also include a digest episode of the Anime series, narrated by Kyo, and a brand-new Anime story about Tohru and Kyo, set after the series.

With the announcement of the date for the prelude set to release in Japan on February 18, 2022, more information is being released everyday about the film. Most recently a new visual, trailer, and character art for Kyoko Honda and Katsuya Honda has been revealed.

The new visual can be seen below with a touching symbolism depicting three sets of footprints while Tohru is holding each of her parents’ hands:

The new character art for both of Tohru’s parents have been revealed as well that can be seen below:

For Tohru’s mother we get to see her school uniform and hair which is reminiscent of the Yankii and Bosozoku image in Japan.

Yankii is a subculture of delinquent students where Bosozoku are motorcyclists that belong to a bike gang with modified motorcycles and outfits that usually consisted of long jackets or flight suits which included kanji with multiple meanings.

For Tohru’s father we are seeing him in his intern teaching attire with his jacket and glasses on and off. In Japan it is quite common for a male teacher to be required to wear a suit and tie.

The trailer focuses on Tohru’s parents Kyoko and Katsuya with a glimpse of how they met and their growing relationship. See the trailer below:

The film also announced that Ohashi Trio will perform the theme song, “Niji to Kite” (“Rainbow and Kite”).

I know many international fans old and new will be waiting for the announcement of the film outside of Japan. Fruits Basket will be continuing to touch the hearts of many especially with this new film.
