The Spring Sweetness
In March, as the weather slowly starts to warm up, Japanese families and couples flock to the countryside for a favorite seasonal activity: “Ichigo-gari” (Strawberry Picking). But it is very different from picking wild berries in a forest.

The High-Tech Greenhouses
Japanese agriculture is famous for producing giant, perfectly shaped, incredibly sweet fruits. Strawberry picking happens inside massive, climate-controlled greenhouses. The strawberry vines are often elevated to waist-height, meaning you don’t even have to bend down to pick them. It is a clean, premium experience.

The All-You-Can-Eat Challenge
For an entrance fee of around $15 to $20, you get 30 to 60 minutes of “All-You-Can-Eat” access. You walk down the warm aisles, plucking massive red strawberries and eating them right on the spot. Some people can eat over 50 strawberries in one session!

The Magic White Tube
At the entrance, the farmer will hand you a small plastic tray and a tube of sweetened condensed milk (Ren-nyu). Dipping the fresh, slightly tart strawberries into the thick, sweet milk is a flavor explosion. For many Japanese people, eating strawberries without condensed milk just feels incomplete.
The Ultimate Spring Date
Because it is indoors (safe from spring rain) and you can take cute photos with bright red fruits, Ichigo-gari is considered one of the most popular romantic dates in March. Just remember to wear comfortable clothes, because you will leave feeling very, very full!
