The Morioka Sansa Odori Festival, held annually from August 1 to 4 in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, is one of the most vibrant festivals in the Tohoku region. During the festival, dancers dressed in various outfits parade through central Morioka City, accompanied by ensembles of taiko drums, flutes, and chants. This festival features a striking taiko drumming performance, with thousands of drummers creating resounding beats. Festival-goers are also encouraged to join in the festivities and dance around the floats later in the event.
In addition to the captivating parade, there are other stunning Sansa Odori performances held around the city. Morioka was featured on the New York Times’ 2023 list of “52 Places to Go,” and during this festival, the normally peaceful city overflows with energy and excitement.
