For decades, the playbook for an American restaurant brand entering Japan has been almost boringly consistent: land in Tokyo, ideally in Shibuya, ideally somewhere a teenager will photograph. Fatburger followed that playbook once, in 2018. It did not end well. So when the Los Angeles institution came back to Japan, it did something nobody expected. It skipped Tokyo entirely.
Quick Answer: Fatburger Japan is back, and this time it is in Okinawa. The Kadena store opened on January 7, 2026, as the first of four locations planned over five years. The company pointed to Okinawa’s tourism and the steady foot traffic generated by the local military base presence as the reason. Japanese media billed the store as the brand’s Asian flagship.
And if the name sounds familiar even though you have never eaten there, there is a reason. It is not advertising.
A Three-Stool Stand in South Los Angeles

In 1947, Lovie Yancey opened a hamburger stand on Western Avenue in South Central Los Angeles. It had three stools. Her partner, Charles Simpson, worked in construction and built the stand out of scrap materials. They called it Mr. Fatburger, borrowing the slang of the era, in which “fat” meant the best, the top of the line.
Yancey was born in Bastrop, Texas, in 1912 and moved to Los Angeles in the 1930s. The Western Avenue stand took off, and the two opened three more locations between 1947 and 1952. When the partnership ended in 1952, Yancey kept the original store, dropped the “Mr.” from the sign, and built the model the chain still runs on today. She worked 16-hour shifts. By 1973 she had opened on La Cienega Boulevard near Beverly Hills. Regulars at the counter included Redd Foxx and Ray Charles, who would custom-order their burgers.
A Black woman building a restaurant brand in segregated 1940s Los Angeles is the part of the story that rarely makes it onto a menu. Yancey died in 2008 at the age of 96.
How a Burger Stand Ended Up in the Hip-Hop Canon

Ice Cube named the chain in his 1992 track “It Was a Good Day,” in a line about a 2 a.m. burger run. The Notorious B.I.G. referenced it in “Going Back to Cali,” and Tupac mentioned it in “Late Night.” Three of the most quoted West Coast records of the era, and a hamburger stand is in all of them.
The affection appears to be mutual. Fatburger’s Westchester location carries a mural of Ice Cube on its exterior reading “Today was a good day,” and Ice Cube has publicly called it the best burger in California, ordering the Kingburger with mayo, mustard, an egg, and chili.
The ownership history is almost as eventful. Magic Johnson acquired the chain in 2001 and expanded it before selling his controlling interest in 2003 to Fog Cutter Capital. Today it belongs to FAT Brands, a franchising company with 18 restaurant concepts and more than 2,300 locations worldwide.
Fatburger Japan: Shibuya in 2018, Gone by 2023

Fatburger’s first attempt at Japan opened on April 28, 2018, in MAGNET by SHIBUYA109, steps from Shibuya Crossing. It was a co-branded flagship combining Fatburger, the wing brand Buffalo’s Express, and a bar concept called FatBar, operated by a Japanese company called Green Micro Factory.
It closed in 2023. Japanese coverage attributes the closure to the pandemic.
Here is the detail that makes the return interesting. When FAT Brands announced in September 2025 that Fatburger was coming back to Japan, the partner named in the announcement was Green Micro Factory. The same operator. Seven years later, a different island, a second attempt.
Fatburger Okinawa: Why Not Tokyo?
Taylor Wiederhorn, chief development officer at FAT Brands, put it plainly when the deal was announced, citing Okinawa’s robust tourism and the reliable foot traffic that comes with the military base presence, and framing the opening as a first step toward broader growth across the country.
Strip away the corporate phrasing and the logic is sound. In Shibuya, an American burger is competing against every food concept on earth for the attention of people who have infinite options. In Kadena, an American burger is closer to the local vernacular. Okinawa has spent decades folding American food culture into its own, and the customer who already knows what a chili cheeseburger is supposed to taste like is standing right there.
The store sits at 327-1 Mizugama, Kadena Town, open 11:00 to 22:00. A pre-opening period ran from December 15 to 30, 2025, ahead of the January 7, 2026 grand opening. On the first day of the pre-opening, the parking lot filled before the doors opened. It is roughly a 70-minute drive from Naha.
Fun Fact:
FAT Brands also owns Johnny Rockets, Round Table Pizza, Great American Cookies, and Hot Dog on a Stick. The company that started as one woman’s three-stool stand is now a sibling of the mall pretzel counter.
