The Demographic Shift
Japan is famous for its rapidly declining birthrate, but that doesn’t mean the country is empty of small, cute companions. In fact, for the last decade, the number of registered pet dogs and cats in Japan has significantly outnumbered the total population of human children under the age of 15!

The Pampered Companions
Because many young people are choosing not to have children, they shower their pets with human-level affection. It is incredibly common to see people taking their daily 7,000 steps through the neighborhood while pushing their miniature poodles or dachshunds in expensive, luxury baby strollers, dressed in seasonal designer outfits.

The Cafe Culture Shock
But here is the irony: despite this massive pet boom, Japan is surprisingly strict about where dogs can go. Unlike Los Angeles, where almost every cafe with a patio warmly welcomes dogs with a bowl of water, most Japanese restaurants and cafes strictly prohibit pets from entering the premises due to hygiene laws.

The Housing Hurdle
This strictness extends to housing, too. Finding an apartment or a concrete “Mansion” that allows pets in Tokyo is incredibly difficult and expensive. Landlords often ban them completely to avoid noise complaints and scratched floors.
The Ultimate Luxury
So, while Japan might have more pets than children, owning a dog there is considered a high-end luxury requiring serious dedication and money. If you love sipping coffee with your dog by your side, SoCal is still the undisputed paradise!
