But here is the irony: despite this massive pet boom, Japan is surprisingly strict about where dogs can go. Unlike Los Angeles, where almost every cafe with a patio warmly welcomes dogs with a bowl of water, most Japanese restaurants and cafes strictly prohibit pets from entering the premises due to hygiene laws.

The Housing Hurdle

This strictness extends to housing, too. Finding an apartment or a concrete “Mansion” that allows pets in Tokyo is incredibly difficult and expensive. Landlords often ban them completely to avoid noise complaints and scratched floors.

The Ultimate Luxury

So, while Japan might have more pets than children, owning a dog there is considered a high-end luxury requiring serious dedication and money. If you love sipping coffee with your dog by your side, SoCal is still the undisputed paradise!
