What is IZAKAYA? 居酒屋 izakaya /ɪzə’kʌɪə/

“I-zakaya” is a compound word. The “I” means “stay” and “sakaya” defines “alcohol shop.” This indicates that Izakaya was originated from alcohol shops where they let customers sit in tables and drink. Since the prices aren’t too expensive, many of the people in Japan go with a big group and share many foods so they can taste a wide range of foods with a reasonable price. Also chain Izakaya usually offer all you can eat course and all you can drink course for a limited time (about 2-3hours). However here in California, rather than sharing many different foods and drinks they prefer to order for themselves, which you can really try Japanese cuisine accessible. Usually Japanese restaurant has a teishoku style (set menu) but if you’re not too hungry you can try food with small portion which is popular for women. Ages ago in Japan, Izakaya was known as a pub where old men gather after work and also known as not a clean place, so it wasn’t a place for kids and women. Nowadays this style has changed. It’s popular for girls in Japan because it became fancier with nice furniture, since girls love to chat for a long time it opens late and some place has discount for just girls “Jyoshi-kai” (girl’s party). Birthday parties, welcome parties, special date, family occasion, business meetings…many kinds of scene takes place here. Even families with kids come here because you don’t have to worry for the kids to be very quiet. And there are foods that kids love to try. Most of the Izakaya has private room so if you want to have a secret meeting? Izakaya is the right place. It’s not just known as a place where you eat and drink. The Izakaya menu offers a ton of dishes in high in protein such as edamame, tofu, and seafood-base cuisine. By eating a lot of protein hangovers can actually be prevented because protein helps coat your stomach and slow the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream. There are miscellaneous styles of Izakaya, so find your own style and enjoy with your five sense (look, taste, hear, touch, smell).
