Shopping in Japan is already affordable due to the weak Yen, but you can make it even cheaper. Look for the “Tax-Free” logo (usually a cherry blossom icon) at shops like Don Quijote, Uniqlo, and drugstores. As a tourist staying less than 6 months, you are exempt from the 10% consumption tax. It’s an instant discount!

To qualify, you usually need to spend more than 5,000 yen (excluding tax) at one store on the same day. The most critical rule: You must have your ORIGINAL PASSPORT with you. Photos or copies are not accepted. The staff will scan your passport at the register to process the deduction.

If you buy “consumables” (snacks, cosmetics, skincare), the staff will pack them in a special sealed plastic bag. DO NOT OPEN this bag while you are in Japan! If customs officials check and the seal is broken, you may have to pay the tax back at the airport. Keep them sealed until you are safely back in your home country.
