Walk into a Tokyo station, and you will see a giant map with hundreds of station names. Trying to find your fare is stressful. The truth is, most locals don’t buy paper tickets. They use IC Cards (Suica or PASMO). And the best part? You can add them to your US iPhone or Apple Watch right now! You do not need a Japanese phone number or Apple ID.

It is incredibly easy. Open your “Wallet” app, tap the “+” button, select “Transit Card,” and search for “Suica” or “PASMO.” Follow the prompts to add money using your credit card stored in Apple Pay. Pro Tip: Mastercard and AMEX work best for recharging. Some non-Japanese VISA cards may fail, so try a different card if you get an error.

Once added, just tap your phone on the gate reader (“Beep!”). It automatically calculates the fare when you exit. No math, no maps. You can also use this card to buy drinks at vending machines or snacks at convenience stores. Set it up at the airport (or even before you leave LA) and breeze through the gates like a pro!
