In many countries, a vending machine standing alone on a dark street would be vandalized or broken into within days. In Japan, they stand pristine and glowing on mountain roads, quiet residential streets, and even in farm fields.

There are approximately 4 million vending machines in Japan. That’s about one machine for every 30 people! You can find almost anything in them: hot coffee in a can, cold green tea, corn soup, banana shakes, and in some regions, even “Dashi” (soup stock) or flying fish. Look closely at the buttons. You will see RED labels for “Hot” drinks and BLUE labels for “Cold” ones. It’s a small detail, but being able to buy a piping hot coffee instantly in the middle of winter is a luxury you will miss once you leave Japan.

Why are there so many? The answer lies in Japan’s incredibly low crime rate and high labor costs. It is safe to leave a machine filled with cash unattended, and it acts as a 24-hour unmanned shop. They are essentially small, glowing robots that keep the population hydrated.
