Don’t Be Suspicious!
While walking near a train station, a stranger might approach you and try to hand you a small plastic packet. You might think, “Is there a catch? Do I have to pay?” Don’t worry! It is completely free. In Japan, handing out tissues is a popular form of advertising called “Tissue-kubari.” It is a friendly gesture, not a trap, so feel free to take one.

Marketing You Can Use
Look closely at the package. There is a colorful flyer inside advertising a karaoke bar, a fitness gym, or a contact lens shop. unlike paper flyers that you throw away immediately, companies know you will keep tissues because they are useful. It is a brilliant strategy: every time you wipe your nose, you look at their brand logo.

Accept It (You Will Need It)
Our advice? Always take the tissue. Why? Because in Japan, you will face many “messy” situations: sweating during the humid summer, dealing with a runny nose from hay fever in spring, or splashing Ramen broth on your shirt. Having a stash of free tissues in your bag is a great survival hack. Smile, say “Thank you,” and stockpile them!
