Not Just a Field Day
In the US, “Field Day” is a fun, casual event. In Japan, “Undokai” (Sports Day) is a serious, mandatory festival. Students practice for weeks. They march in perfect synchronization like a military parade. It is not just about sports; it is about discipline and group harmony.

The Human Pyramid
The highlight is often “Kumitaiso” (Group Gymnastics). Students climb on top of each other to form massive human pyramids or towers. It is dangerous and controversial, but it is considered the ultimate display of trust and teamwork. (Recently, it is becoming safer due to regulations).

Is That a Sport?
Some events are bizarre.
・“O-dama Korogashi” (Big Ball Rolling): Rolling a giant ball taller than the kids. It is a mix of Olympics and a comedy show.
・“Pan-kui Kyoso” (Bread Eating Race): You must run and bite a hanging pastry without using your hands.

The Family Picnic
It is a huge event for the community. Parents and grandparents come to watch with cameras. Mothers wake up at 5:00 AM to make elaborate Bento boxes for the whole family. Dads rush to the school gate at dawn to save the best viewing spot.
Red vs. White
The entire school is divided into two teams: Red Team vs. White Team. They wear colored headbands and scream cheer songs to intimidate the enemy. For one day, the school becomes a battlefield, and winning the team trophy is more important than individual glory.

Undokai is a big event, but Japanese kids are intense every day during recess. Whether fighting with balls or trading stickers, the playground is a serious place.
1. The Combat Recess If you think the human pyramid is intense, watch them play Dodgeball. In Japan, it involves pincer attacks from the “Outfield” and is taken as seriously as a professional sport.

2. The Classroom Currency Off the field, the battle changes to economics. Kids trade “Stickers” like money to prove friendship. The rules of trading “Shiny” vs. “Normal” stickers are strict!.
