The Autumn “Hunt”

In traditional Japanese, the word “hunting” can also mean searching for and admiring beautiful things in nature. The Mountain Canvas
Because Japan is 70% mountainous and heavily forested, the shift in seasons turns the entire landscape into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant colors. It is a deeply meditative experience, often paired with visiting a historic temple or soaking in an outdoor hot spring (Onsen) surrounded by the colorful trees.

The Mt. Takao Escape
You don’t even have to travel deep into the countryside to experience it. If you are staying in Tokyo, you can easily take a short train ride to Mt. Takao. It offers a gentle hike, famous street food, and incredibly gorgeous autumn foliage right on the edge of the metropolis.
The Contrast with SoCal
For those living in Southern California, where the palm trees stay green all year and it feels like an endless summer, Japan’s dramatic and distinct autumn is a visual shock. Traveling to Japan in November for a “leaf hunt” is one of the most highly recommended, picturesque experiences you can have.
