The “Okaeshi” Culture
This holiday is built on the deep Japanese custom of “Okaeshi” (Return Gift). If someone gives you something, you are socially obligated to give something back. You cannot just receive chocolate and say “Thanks!” That would be rude. White Day was invented to facilitate this polite exchange.

Spreading to Asia
Interestingly, this unique Japanese custom has spread to neighboring countries. Now, you will see White Day celebrated in South Korea, Taiwan, and China. It has become an East Asian phenomenon, while the rest of the world remains confused about why men are panic-buying cookies in March.

The “Triple Return” Rule
For men, this day is terrifying. There is an unspoken rule called “Sanbai-Gaeshi” (Triple Return). It means the gift you give back should be three times the value of the chocolate you received. If she gave you a $10 chocolate, you better buy a $30 gift, or you look cheap!
