With the continued trend of a weak yen, the number of visitors to Japan has been steadily increasing. In 2024, the number of inbound tourists reached 36.86 million, setting a new all-time annual record. Notably, the United States ranked 4th in the number of visitors by country.
Japan’s rich cultural heritage, exquisite cuisine, and breathtaking seasonal landscapes continue to captivate travelers from around the world.

At the same time, travel styles are becoming increasingly diverse. In the past, many tourists focused on experiencing Japan’s history by visiting famous temples and strolling through old townscapes. However, today’s travelers have a wider range of interests. Some explore locations featured in anime and manga, while others embrace AI-powered travel recommendations for unique adventures. There is also a growing trend of free-spirited travel, such as cycling as far as one can go. Solo travel is on the rise as well, with individual travelers making up approximately 20% of visitors in 2021.
One of the most popular reasons to visit Japan is undoubtedly food. While Japanese cuisine is available worldwide, many travelers seek the authentic experience. From sushi, tempura, and wagyu beef to standing soba shops and tiny five-seat izakayas, where conversations with the owner — often in broken English — become a cherished memory. For those with a sweet tooth, visiting a confectionery factory to taste freshly made sweets and bring home unique treats is a delightful experience.
While shopping for souvenirs and luxury brands remains a major draw, experience- based tourism is gaining popularity. Popular activities include:
- Climbing Mount Fuji
- Renting a kimono for a stroll through historic districts
- Learning to make Wagashi traditional Japanese sweets
- Participating in tea ceremonies or watching traditional performing arts like Noh and Kabuki
- Staying at luxury ryokan inns and enjoying hot spring tours
- Taking part in traditional festivals
- Viewing cherry blossoms or exploring Japan’s national parks
- Visiting artisan workshops to observe traditional craftsmanship
- Cooking class (soba noodles, sushi, bento, etc.)
Japan’s appeal extends far beyond its famous landmarks, offering visitors countless ways to immerse themselves in its culture, history, and local experiences.

Prepare Ahead to Avoid Hassles and Make the Most of Your Stay!
Here’s a list of common inconveniences faced by inbound tourists in Japan and their solutions:
1. Language Barrier
Difficulty communicating in Japanese, especially in rural areas.
Solution: Use translation apps like Google Translate or DeepL.
2. Complex Public Transportation System
Understanding train and bus routes can be overwhelming.
Solution: Use apps like Google Maps, Japan Transit Planner, or Hyperdia for navigation. Simply type “OO station to OO station” into Google, and it will provide a suggested train schedule, fare, and the platform you need. Also, get an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) for convenient travel.
3. Limited Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi isn’t always available in public places.
Solution: Rent a portable Wi-Fi or get a SIM card at the airport. Some convenience stores and cafés offer free Wi-Fi.
4. Cash-Only Stores and Restaurants
Some places don’t accept credit cards.
Solution: Withdraw cash at ATMs in convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson), which accept international cards.

5. Trash Disposal Issues
Few public trash cans make it hard to throw away garbage.
Solution: Carry a small bag for trash and dispose of it at your hotel or convenience stores. You will likely enjoy trying different foods and drinks while walking around, so having a small bag can be very convenient. In Japan, drinking alcohol in public places is also allowed.
6. Restaurant Etiquette
Unfamiliarity with customs such as ordering, paying, and removing shoes in certain establishments.
Solution: Learn basic dining etiquette, check menus outside restaurants, and use touchscreen ordering systems in chain restaurants. No tipping required.
7. Overcrowded Tourist Spots
Popular sites can be extremely crowded, especially in peak seasons.
Solution: Visit early in the morning, explore lesser-known spots, or travel during off-peak seasons.
