Sabrina

  • Home country/city: France
  • Occupation: Tour guide, YouTube videos (www.sabrina-injapan.com)
  • Duration of living in Japan: Since 2022 years
  • Why do you live in Japan?:I’ve always been fascinated by Japanese culture — from traditions and festivals to everyday life. Living here allows me to really immerse myself, not just as a visitor but in daily life, which is something I find very rewarding.

Were you hesitant to relocate to Japan?

Not at all! I love adventures, so I usually jump first and think later. Life is too short to hesitate on perfect opportunities!

Yes, with communication!

In Japan, people often think about the group first and try not to disturb others — whether it’s on the train or in daily interactions. In my country, people are more individual and direct in expressing themselves.

What do you miss about your maternal country living in Japan?

What I miss the most is of course my family. But since I’ve been living abroad since 2014, even before Japan, I’ve learned to adapt. I try to take the best of each culture and bring into my daily life what I feel is missing from my own country.

What do you find different about living in Japan over the term compared to when you first arrived or came as a tourist?

As a tour guide specializing in off-the-beaten-path experiences, I’ve noticed over the past three years that things have changed compared to when I first arrived. Because of social media, many places that used to feel secret or hidden are no longer so, and even local neighborhoods are becoming more known to visitors.

What do you do in Japan? Can you talk about your job in Japan?

Since 2023, I’ve been working as a freelance tour guide in Tokyo, in both French and English. I specialize in showing an authentic side of the city, beyond the usual tourist spots, and I design tours that give people a unique and personal experience through encounters with locals.
I also create YouTube vlogs on my channel ‘Sabrina in Japan’, where I share my solo discoveries as well as family adventures and daily life in Japan.
In addition, I do chronicles in French for an independent show about video games in France, which I replay on my secondary YouTube channel, ‘Les Chroniques de Sabrina’.

What do you appreciate most about Japanese culture?

I really appreciate the respect and care that people show in daily life, and the way traditions and attention to detail are valued.

I haven’t seen all the prefectures yet, but my personal safe haven is Gifu. I love its mix of nature, history, and traditional culture — it’s the side of Japan I love the most.

My favorite way to travel with my family is by road trip in a van or kei car(small car). We squeeze the three of us to sleep in the car sometimes, but the freedom it gives us — stopping wherever we want, exploring hidden spots, and really living in the moment — is completely worth it. Road trips like this let us experience Japan in a very personal and adventurous way.

I would recommend trying an onsen without hesitation. And even if people don’t have time to visit the countryside, an urban sento can also be a perfect experience. Just make sure to learn the basic rules beforehand so you can enjoy it properly.

Gyoza, always and forever! Even before coming to Japan, I’ve always loved them, and living here has made me appreciate them even more.

I always take life one step at a time and don’t plan too far ahead. I enjoy my life and take every opportunity that comes my way, without knowing what tomorrow will bring. For now, I’m here in Japan, and I’m enjoying it fully.
